Project Overview

Thompson Construction Group selected Incorp Industries to provide mechanical insulation services at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, Virginia. Operated by BAE Systems, the plant is a government-owned, contractor-operated manufacturing site supporting U.S. defense operations. Having previously completed work at the facility, Incorp brought prior site experience and an established understanding of the site’s security, safety, and quality requirements.

Objective

The objective was to provide heat conservation and personnel protection insulation for several hundred linear feet of steam, condensate, and heating water piping, along with associated process equipment. Incorp’s scope also included insulation for flash tanks, after coolers, and an 8-inch duct system. These systems supported thermal efficiency and long-term performance across key utility infrastructure and associated equipment.

Application

Execution required careful coordination within a controlled operating environment where site access and work activities were subject to established protocols.

Piping and equipment were insulated using mineral wool insulation systems jacketed with .016 aluminum. The 8-inch ductwork was insulated using Armaflex insulation with a .016 aluminum jacket. The selected insulation materials provided thermal protection for personnel while supporting the long-term performance of the insulated piping, equipment, and ductwork.

Result

The project was completed safely, on schedule, and within budget with no reported incidents. Successful execution reinforced Incorp's established working relationship with Thompson Construction and the facility, demonstrating the team's ability to deliver quality mechanical insulation on critical defense infrastructure.
